Spill Response 101: What to Do (and What to Keep On Hand)

Spills happen, even on the most careful job sites. What matters most isn't preventing every single one, it's how quickly and correctly your team responds when it does. Here's a simple rundown of the basics.
Step 1: Stop the source, if it's safe to do so
Before anything else, if you can safely stop what's causing the spill, whether that's a leaking container, an open valve, or a knocked-over drum, do that first. Don't put yourself at risk to do it. If it's not safe to approach, contain the spill from a distance instead and get help.
Step 2: Contain it before it spreads
This is where sorbent socks or rolls come in. Placing them around the perimeter of a spill keeps it from spreading further, especially important if there's a floor drain, waterway, or slope nearby. Containing first, then absorbing, is generally more effective than trying to soak up a spreading spill all at once.
Step 3: Absorb and collect
Once contained, use sorbent pads or rolls to soak up the spill itself. For oil-based spills, oil-only sorbents are worth having on hand since they absorb hydrocarbons while repelling water, useful for spills that happen outdoors or near wet surfaces. For general spills, universal sorbents handle a broader range of liquids.
Step 4: Dispose of materials properly
Used sorbents, especially those that absorbed chemicals or fuel, usually can't just go in a regular trash bin. Check your local regulations and your facility's waste disposal procedures, this part gets overlooked more often than it should.
What to keep on hand, before you need it
The best spill response is the one you're prepared for in advance. A basic kit for most facilities should include:
- Sorbent rolls or pads (universal and oil-only)
- Sorbent socks for containment
- Gloves and eye protection for the person responding
- A designated, clearly labeled storage spot that's easy to grab in a hurry
If your current spill kit is more of a "grab whatever's nearby" situation, it might be worth putting together a proper kit and keeping it stocked. It's a small investment that saves a lot of cleanup time, and risk, later on.
